Devotion is the newest project from the front man of the now defunct NWHC band Go it Alone. Mark Palm is one of the best dudes I have met since living here in the NW and his bands are some of the best the NW scene has to offer.

Devotion is a cross between old soundgarden and go it alone. Mark wrote all the music and lyrics himself. It was recorded by him and the drummer. Only super talented musicians can write and play the entire record themselves. Devotions debut LP is available from Rivalry Records. Check out Mark's blog at www.thesearemoderntimes.blogspot.com.

Their next NW show takes place in January at the Fusion Cafe in downtown Seattle with Ceremony.

If you like old soundgarden and or hardcore music you will definitely dig this band.

Converge Live at The Undertow / Unbroken Reunion Show Oct 2009

Converge was the secret band that played on Oct. 3rd with Undertow and Unbroken at El Corazon in Seattle WA. This band blew me away that night. My friend who has seen them many times said this was their best set ever!

I owned a few albums from this band but wasnt really a fan until this show.

Unbroken is an hardcore punk band from the Northwest. The band has been broken up for awhile now but played a series of reunion shows in 2009. This video is a few songs from their Seattle reunion show with Undertow, Strain and Balance of the World on Oct 3rd 2009 at El Corazon.

This band is definitely one of my favorite NWHC bands of all time! I can relate to their songs in a big way, especially the songs in this video.

The Varukers Live in Seattle oct 2009 part 1

Old school English punk rock band The Varukers played their first Seattle show in 7 years on Saturday October 10th 2009. I recorded 15 minutes of their set. The tape I had was only that long due to my camera being a digital hi-8 which cuts down normal hi-8 tapes in half. I photographed the rest of the show.

Never Looking Back's Last Show

Here are a collection of photographs of the last ever Never Looking Back show at the Viaduct in Tacoma Washington. This band has meant more to me than probably any other band that I had the privilege to discover and know. There have been many bands in Connecticut and New York City that came close but nothing like how I feel when I am listening to Never Looking Back. I have some deep pain that their songs help me deal with. In the darkest moments there have been certain songs that have saved me from throwing my life away. I feel lucky to know of two bands in the NWHC scene that have saved my life - Never Looking Back and Vanguard. In honor of Jeremy, Shannon, Josh, Kenny and Cory-here are the last ever pictures of Never Looking Back playing live. I hope maybe in a few years they do a reunion. Fingers crossed. Let Down, Reign Supreme, At Half Mast and Kids Like Us at the Viaduct.

Reign Supreme came into town with Let Down and Kids like us. At Half Mast also played this show but almost did not make it. By the time they made it there most people had left, but these guys drove 20 hours straight from Denver to make it this show. Mostly because I have been a big fan of theirs for a few years and one of their biggest supporters. I had waited since 06 to see them live and was hella bummed when I was told that they had to cancel. But before Kids Like us played, it was announced that they were going to make it after all. Most people left after KLU, which was disappointing but I am sure some of them had a long drive ahead of them. Anyway I was stoked and it was good to finally meet the band in person and they told me one of the reasons they had to make this show was for me. Thanks Guys! That will forever mean a lot. Anyway some locals opened the show but I cannot remember who. Here are pictures from all 4 touring bands.

Soul Control played one of its 3 northwest dates at Camp Nowhere. I had been stoked about this show since it was advertised months ago. The lineup changed a few times, with ON and Get the Most dropping off. Dragline also played their Seattle record release set at this show. I love that band and their first ep blew me away. I did not take any pictures of them though, unfortunately. I did get pictures of the other three bands though. Thanks to the peeps at Camp Nowhere for saving this show when it got dropped from the Fusion Cafe.

The turn out was good with pretty much the usual cast of characters for a seattle show with Circles and Vanguard. I had a good time and picked up the new record from Dragline-which is amazing by the way. Here are the pictures from that night.

One of the best bands from Las Vegas that were only around for a second is Anthems.
They self released their first EP and it is a good one. You can download it here:

This is not NWHC related but I want to give this band a shout out because their EP is amazing and I would of loved to hear a full length from them. It is definitely one of my favorite releases from this year.

Sojourner Video Shoot.

On Sunday July 20th before the show that evening, NW hardcore band Sojourner filmed a video for their song Tinder at the Viaduct in Tacoma WA. The shoot took place in the alley in the back of the club. The band played a set and then repeated the song Tinder four or five times. The weather was perfect for filming outside, sunny and warm. Local M.I.O.L.I. crew favorite Steik bought a bunch of sponge darts and launchers at the dollar store in honor of the occasion. There were about 200 darts flying through the air as the band played and the camera rolled. During the second song some fool from Bremerton planted a fire cracker bomb in the huge garbage can next to the back door of the venue. 4 feet from where I was standing and about 6 feet from where the band was playing.

I was watching as the sponge darts flew through the air. As soon as one of the darts hit the can I heard a mini explosion and all of a sudden smoke poured from the can. It was no ordinary garbage can either. It looked like a huge double recycling bin but was black instead of blue and held non recyclables like styrofoam and other flammable junk. A few seconds later a bunch of us near the fire realized that something was entirely wrong. Zach MIOLI opened it to reveal an awful mess of a little fire. I dumped my water bottle on it and ran into the club for more water. In the meantime a few other awesome dudes started grabbing water too. Nothing worked until someone filled up the mop bucket with water. This little fire was going strong and it could of exploded with all that industrial flammable waste inside. The dudes who run the venue were pissed, especially Brian the singer of Sojourner. Luckily nothing serious happened.

Back in the olden days of hardcore and punk, doing stuff like that got u banned from certain places. This dude was lucky he did not get nothing but a talking to in the office. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

The shoot continued and the filming commenced. Everything went awesome and I am excited to see the video. Below are some pictures of that day.

Lion Rider, Rebuilt and Open Fire open for Shipwreck at the Viaduct.

Thursday July 25th Shipwreck came to Tacoma. Although the turn out was not too high, everyone that went came through and made sure Shipwreck sold a good deal of hoodies and windbreakers. I was proud that a band can come all the way to Tacoma with less than 30 paid and walk away with more money than I currently have in the bank. This makes me happy. With gas the way it is bands need to sell merch and get a bit of the door just to make it to the next show.
